Presenting: my summer fashion essentials for 2017!
I know, I’m getting to this a little late. Bear with me… I’m new to blogging!
I haven’t even done one fashion post yet, and while I don’t consider myself a true blue ‘fashion blogger,’ I still wanted to share some of my tips & tricks throughout the seasons… like which staples you need in your wardrobe, how to style certain pieces, etc. I am not much of a trendy girl, so most of what you’ll see here on Emily Andy will be classic, neutral pieces with a few fun things thrown in.
Without further ado, let’s get started! These summer fashion essentials will keep you looking fly through Labor Day.
Obviously these are a staple in any girl’s summer wardrobe. I prefer mine to have a little twist like the couple seen here; these ones from Noisy May have a rolled hem (and are on sale! major bonus!), and these from Express have a little white lace detail peeking out on the sides. Both are affordable and super comfortable. The Noisy May ones fit so well that I am considering buying them in both the darker and lighter washes! The Express shorts actually ran a little big, so I bought one size smaller than normal (although I could’ve probably gone one more size down #hellyes).
Denim shorts are the ultimate in summer fashion essentials since they go with everythinggg. Most of my summer events are more casual, so these are appropriate for pretty much everything in my life besides work or formal affairs. Not to mention they pair well with everything from fun, flirty blouses to regular Ts, to a bikini top.
A fun twist: denim skirts! At 26, I’m too old to rock the denim mini skirt like in middle school, but I do feel appropriate wearing a longer length, button-up skirt like this one from Forever21. This is great for the office, a swimsuit cover up, or casual summer dates.
These are a year-round staple. Every fashion article in the world will tell you that a plain white t-shirt is a fashion essential in every wardrobe. Why not mix it up with some fun colors or prints? I’m a big fan of cool tones, so I tend to prefer blues & grays, but the options are seriously endless. These are versatile because I can wear them to work, for a casual date with the boyf, or while running errands in 90 degree heat. Again, not super fancy, but I’m really not telling you anything you didn’t already know. 🙂
These are so #trendy right now that they are a MUST HAVE in summer 2017. As I’m adding pics into this blog post, I keep noticing my obsession with blue and white (wtf Emily?) but regardless, both are so cute! The blue was from TJ Maxx and cost about $10; the white is from Express. These are so feminine and girly, and would be adorable at fun summer events like a backyard BBQ or bonfire. It’s definitely a little sexy to show some collarbone in the summertime! 🙂
Duh. Swim suits to summer are like Ugg boots to winter (at least in Michigan). They may be the number one item on my list of summer fashion essentials! My parents have a lake house so most of the time my swim suit collection is split between there and my house for local events. I think it’s important to have a staple, appropriate one-piece (perfect for beach days with the boyfriend’s family). Cute bikinis that show off your style and give you the tan lines you crave are obviously also on the list too! My bikini was mentioned in my spring fashion haul video, and it’s by the brand LA Hearts from Pac Sun. The black one piece is a couple years old, and I don’t remember which site but I bought it on some shady corner of the internet somewhere (here’s a cheap similar option).
The BEST shoe purchase I have made so far in 2017 is a pair of plain black suede mules. I already had so many tan and brown sandals, that I wanted something black to go with my darker or black-based outfits. Luckily, these bad boys were on sale! They go perfectly with jeans, my button-up denim skirt, and a casual black T-shirt dress – and not to mention how easy they are to wear. They’re great neutral shoes that are certainly on trend at the moment. Mine are suede, but I’ve seen this look with leather or a jelly/ rubber material work just as well 🙂
Another shoe I frequently wear in the summer is a tan lace up sandal/flat. These honestly go well with everything & are trendy enough without overdoing it. This is a great, affordable option you can wear with jeans, shorts, skirts, or dresses.
Here’s the thing… I’m always cold. Always. Unless I just got done working out or blow drying my hair, or I’m standing in direct sunshine, chances are very high that I am COLD. Isn’t this a woman thing though?! I even have a space heater in my office at work because it is FRIGID in here with the air conditioning on! Sweaters aren’t probably top of mind when thinking ‘summer fashion essentials’, but… sometimes I just want a little more warmth to my summer outfits. Usually I’ll throw on a lightweight, lighter color summer sweater (usually over a tank or bralette) for cool nights spent hanging out at a bonfire or date nights on chilly patios. These two were on sale from Express and only about $12 each. Score one for off-season shopping! The ones I recently purchased aren’t online anymore, but I think this is a great option.
Bodysuits & Bralettes
Bodysuits are perfect for looking sleek while also staying comfy! The two pictured are from Windsor and Forever21. Both are black (shocking, knowing me) and can be played up or down. I think the Windsor bodysuit is great by itself paired with a denim skirt, or perhaps with a leather jacket thrown over for an edgier look. I’ve worn the ribbed henley one with black pants and a jean jacket and by itself with cropped summer jeans. I think the ribbed bodysuit, denim skirt, and silver hoops would be so cute with the black slides for a backyard bbq!
I personally don’t wear bralettes as tops, but I know plenty of ~Insta girls~ do – so if that’s your jam, more power to ya! However, I do love a flirty, lacy bralette sneaking out from an unsuspecting tank for a sexy vibe. Here’s one I recently purchased from Aerie that is not only comfy but looks great too!
